USER ALERT: CHROME EXTENSION CONFLICT (FEB 24, 2026)
ChatGPT Search Extension Broken? Here is the Fix
If you woke up today to find your SearchGPT or legacy ChatGPT Search Chrome extension showing a "Connection Error" or a blank screen, you aren't alone.
Why the Extensions are Failing Today
OpenAI has officially begun the "Hard Migration" to its integrated search architecture. This update has changed the internal API hooks that third-party extensions used to rely on. To maintain security, Chrome is also flagging older AI extensions as "Manifest V2" (obsolete).
3 Steps to Restore Functionality:
- The "Purge" Method: Go to
chrome://extensionsand remove all OpenAI-related extensions. Overlap is causing 90% of the crashes today. - Reset the "Search" Flag: In your ChatGPT settings, toggle the Search Beta off and then back on to force the native 2026 UI to load.
- Manual Hook Update: If you are a developer using API-based search, you must update your endpoint to the
v2/search-agentprotocol released this morning.
Transitioning to Native Search
OpenAI recommends moving away from extensions entirely. The new 2026 Native Search is 3x faster and includes real-time attribution links that extensions often fail to render correctly.
