A Political Strategist Like No Other
Mukul Roy, often described as the "Chanakya" of West Bengal politics during his prime, suffered a cardiac arrest at a private hospital in Kolkata. He had been battling health complications, including Parkinson's and dementia, for the past two years.
A Legacy of 40 Years:
- TMC Founding Member: Roy was a pillar of the Trinamool Congress from its inception in 1998, serving as its principal troubleshooter.
- Union Minister: He served as the 32nd Union Railway Minister in 2012 under the UPA-II government.
- BJP Stint: In 2017, he joined the BJP and rose to become its National Vice President, instrumental in the party's 2019 Lok Sabha success in Bengal.
Condolences Pour In
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have expressed their deep grief. PM Modi noted that Roy will be remembered for his "extensive political experience and efforts to serve society." Roy is survived by his son, Shuvrangshu Roy.
